MASON CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE
The City of Mason City, Iowa, will again be taking applications for the Civil Service Commission’s entrance examinations for the full-time position of Fire Fighter in 2015. The entrance examinations consist of written and physical ability examinations. Applicants must hold an EMT-B or higher certification (National or Iowa) in order to test. Testing is always done on a Saturday – usually in May — at the Mason City Fire Department, 350 5th St SW, Mason City, IA.
Applications – Only applicants who have completed the City’s application and complied with all pre-testing requirements and deadlines can take the written and physical ability tests. Applications must be received by Human Resources at the City of Mason (either in person or completed on-line) by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, may 1, 2015. Information can always be found on the Fire Department’s webpages (www.masoncity.net) as well. Applications in 2015 can be completed and submitted from the City’s webpage electronically or originally submitted to the Human Resources Department at City Hall (10 1st St NW, Mason City, IA. No other electronic submissions of applications are currently anticipated being accepted.
Minimum Standards for Hiring – Applicants must be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age at time of employment. Prior to hiring, individuals must comply with all State of Iowa standards for fire fighters, including no record of felony convictions or crimes of moral turpitude. Individuals must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record in accordance with City policy. Applicants cannot be considered if they have been convicted of driving under the influence within the past five years. Pre-employment physical and drug testing will be done as a condition of employment.
Testing – Testing is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Mason City Fire Department. Applicants who have submitted a completed application, will receive a packet detailing the scope and requirements for the written and physical ability testing. The packet sent out will also explain the exact nature of all documentation required to be presented before an applicant can sit for the written test. This packet will also provide the applicants with information regarding the scope of the physical ability tests.
Civil Service List – Applicants who successfully pass the written and physical ability tests may be placed on the Department’s Civil Service List. All fire fighters are hired from a current Civil Service Commission list.
Special Requirements for Fire Fighters – Fire fighters at the Mason City Fire Department must: obtain a Class D Chauffeurs license prior to starting employment; live within 10 miles of the City’s limits within 6 months; be Fire Fighter I certified no more than 1 year after their employment starts; and have Paramedic certification within 3 years.
Salary and Benefits – Starting salary is $18.54 ($38,563.20 annually) to $19.60 ($40,760 annually) per hour depending upon EMT certification level and education.
