The Call to Recognize Sacrifice
Minnesota’s EMS professionals are essential first responders, risking their lives to protect our communities. Tragically, some of these heroes make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, yet their contributions often go unrecognized. The Minnesota State EMS Line of Duty Death (LODD) Memorial Foundation is dedicated to changing that by creating a permanent memorial on the Minnesota State Capitol grounds.
Our Mission and Memorial Design
The MN State EMS LODD Memorial Foundation, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, is working to establish Minnesota’s first physical memorial honoring EMS workers who have died in service to our state. This memorial will not only serve as a lasting tribute but also as a place of solace and reflection for families, friends, and colleagues.
Memorial Features and Symbolism
The memorial’s design is both regionally inspired and symbolically rich, incorporating materials sourced from across Minnesota. The central wall will be constructed of red Superior sandstone, etched with an outline of the state and featuring the Minnesota seal in its center. A white line of light or marble will be integrated into the design to represent the medical role of EMS. The names of fallen EMS providers will be carved in central Minnesota granite, symbolizing their strength and enduring impact, and will be surrounded by a reflective courtyard lined with Minnesota limestone.
Additionally, the memorial will honor Minnesota's diverse communities by incorporating the seals of the state’s 11 Tribal Nations, enhancing its inclusiveness and cultural significance.
*Note: The concept artwork represents the proposed design, which may evolve as it progresses through various state committees for approval.
